The Ultimate Ultima Open Day

I have been following Ultima kit cars for at least 12 years now and every year I get further and further drawn into the charm and the beauty that is beheld within this very small but ultimately world-famous kit car company.

Let’s take a look at the stats, and I think they will say a whole lot more than me trying to explain these amazing stats and well more to the point world records.

So what do these stats say about the Ultima kit Car?

It’s blisteringly quick that’s what and that is why I am so excited to be talking about my day out at the Ultima open day a couple of weeks ago.

My journey started on two wheels, and I bombed up the motorway on my Triumph Tiger, and I have to say the M25 is a lot easier and tolerable on a bike than it is in any four-wheeled vehicle and the queues albeit slowed me down somewhat I was still making progress. I can’t stand the long tailbacks who haunt every motorway up and down the country and in a car, you have to sit and wait trying to avoid the temptation to check your emails…

Ultima Kit Car Open Day 2014

I got to the Ultima Factory for about 11am and there were already a lot of cars here, and their owners were chatting and talking about the changes and improvements they have made and that is generally the consensus that was going on around the open day.

It was interesting to hear about what they had done to make the cars more enjoyable, but I have to say it was quite amusing see them arrive and literally get out of the cars as quick as they could because the Ultima’s are so damn hot and the window that opens to let the fresh air in is the size of a beer mat, and I am not talking about the towel type ones but the single round ones.

Well, I wandered around taking lots and lots of photos of every car and generally just pottered about. I had a good look around the factory, and you could see that these guys at Ultima mean business it was very clean in there, and the cars were quite clearly the pride and joy of the company.

The factory was very clean and tidy, and the staff were very friendly there was a buffet on as well, which went down very well with the visitors.

What I love about Ultima is that you are getting super car looks and performance and also the ability to stand out but for not a great deal of money and also even though it is a kit car you will be building it with parts that are all brand new so you do effectively get a brand-new vehicle. You just need the confidence to put this one big super-fast Meccano kit together, and then you are flying.

Ultima offers the full package you get all the support and help from this small yet global company and all they want is for you to be out and enjoying driving their vehicles.

I was talking to the owner of this great-looking Ultima, and he was telling me that all through the summer, he does not put her away in the garage as it is pretty much his daily driver. Now, that is pretty damn awesome, especially as most kit car owners only get theirs out as and when and the car spends most of the time wrapped in cotton wool in their garages.

One comment I did hear a few times, and that was that it was very very hot in the cockpit, and as I mentioned before there were a lot of sweaty drivers walking around but a lot of them did say if they had their time again they would have built the Can-Am version, which is the convertible one just like the one below.

I have yet to have a go in one of the Ultima, but it is on my bucket list of things to do, and I have to say it will be  a dark day… or will it? Some people are strong believers in not driving their dream cars, but I think it should be done, and I aim to hit that list of cars over the next 10 years.

If you do ever get the chance to have a closer look at an Ultima, then you will be blown away by the raw beauty of this car.
