Kit Car Insurance – My Experiences

26 April 2012 By Danny

Kit car insurance can be one of the most challenging car insurances you have to buy. I have owned my freestyle kit car for coming up to 10 years and every year getting insurance has always been a bit of a worry even though I have found a good company for the last five years and not had ay problems.

When I first insured my road buggy it was not too bad, and I was only 19 at the time, and so I was concerned with the price. At the same time, as insuring my kit car, I also owned a Ford Fiesta XR2i, which was an extremely powerful car but was also an extremely high insurance group, which made it very expensive to not only to insure but to run. However, the buggy was only £300 or so to insure which I thought was quite reasonable.

Kit Car Insurance

There are lots of kit car insurance companies out there that can help you get the best price on your insurance policy. Some things you need to look at when getting a quote is that the car has an agreed value and also that it is insured precisely as it is. I always make sure that when I insure my kit car, I send photographs in of the car so that they can see exactly what they are insuring and this just goes to help if the unmentionable happens, and you have to claim on your insurance.

I’ve found over the last 10 years that my policy has not really gone down very much even though I’ve at no time claimed or had an accident, and my licence (touchwood) has been perfectly clean. So this does go a long way to ensuring that my premium is of the lowest it can be. I currently pay about £150 a year fully comprehensive with an agreed value.

So what other things can you do to make sure that your kit car is safe when it’s stored and not being driven. One of the first things I did was to get a steel plate made up with a loop which was then bolted to the concrete garage floor, and my kit car could securely be chained to the ground, but also it was well hidden so that the intruder wouldn’t suspect that the car was bolted to the ground.

The other way I make sure my kit car is as secure as it can be is to make sure at all times one of our normal everyday cars parked in front of the garage it is stored in so that it just makes it bit harder for anybody to steal it.

Kit Car Insurance

The good thing about kit car insurance is that the companies tend to know if you crash or damage your car, you’re most likely going to be the person who is going to be repairing it as no one knows as much as you do about your car, especially if you are the one to build it in the first place. So this is what tends to drive insurance policies down as they know that they realistically are only going to be supplying parts in the case of an accident or will just be paying out the agreed value for car, whether it’s been written off or simply stolen.

Currently, I’m insured with Graham Sykes’s insurance, and I’ve been with this company for the last five or six years, and I have to say I’m quite happy with the way that they have handled not only my policy renewals but also any questions and of course, the agreed value on the car.

Graham Sykes can at the time of taking out a policy offer you a breakdown cover as well, which is only £20 a year which, in my opinion, is a great price. Especially if you have a company car, and you don’t want to buy extra AA or anything like that for the very few miles you may do a year in your kit car.

Graham Sykes know the kit car industry inside out, and this is why they are specialists, and I’m not just saying that I strongly believe they are one of the best insurance companies out there, so I do highly recommend that you pay them a visit.

If you have any questions, or you have used other kit car companies in the past and have made a claim, and you’re impressed with the service you received from them, then, please use the form below and add your comments as I will be very interested to hear what you have to say.
